Virginia Charter Bus Must-Stops In Virginia For Large Groups

Devil’s Bathtub

We know what you’re thinking. Why would we bring you to a place so spooky? And what kind of group is heading to a bathtub together? We promise it’s nothing like that. Why the name? Allegedly it’s named this because it’s “the only water cold enough to squelch the fires of Hades.” The waters of Devil’s Tub have a high temperature of 65 degrees. So, it’s not haunted or a fiery Hades, but why bring you to a place this cold? For those hot summer days, of course, but also for its beauty. The natural swimming hole is also beautiful with a 12-foot-deep aquamarine color given to it by the algae that live in its waters. This area has nearly a dozen river crossings and lots of beautiful greenery to look at around the area. The Devil’s Bathtub is visited by thousands a year, see what the whole fuss is about on one of your Virginia charter bus stops. virginia back road during autumn in virginia countryside

Lucy Burns Museum

If you or the group have ever had an interest in the United States prison system, this spot is for you. Back in the early 20th century, the District of Columbia set out to make a new kind of prison, one that was more humane and economical. Unlike today’s prisons, The Occoquan Workhouse would hold prisoners who were treated fairly and sent to learn useful skill sets to enable them to be self-supporting. The Occoquan Workhouse lasted 91 years and played an incredible part in the 19th Amendment. This brings us to the name of the museum, who is Lucy Burns? A female Suffragette who fought relentlessly to get women the right to vote and a fellow inmate at the Occoquan Workhouse. Today the warehouse serves as a museum with works from local, regional, and national artists along with work from inmates who belonged to the previous prison. If you want to learn about the history of the prison system, make sure that your Virginia charter bus steps here.

The Raven Room in Charlottesville

Ever heard of a little old tale called “The Gold-Bug,” “The Black Cat,” or of course “The Raven?” Yes, this next spot is all about Edgar Allen Poe, who studied at the University of Virginia for just a year but left with such a huge impact, there’s a room dedicated to preserving his time there. This is a dorm room trapped in an era, the year 1924, and is now seen by visitors and the Raven Society which is dedicated to Edgar of course.  Make sure your Virginia charter bus stops here with your crew and pick up some inspiration from the room of The University of Virginia’s beloved ex-college mate and poet. virginia skyland drive blue ridge road with fog

Bunny Man Bridge, Fairfax Station

This next stop is for those who love urban legends, and hopefully tunnels. From the outside, the Colchester Overpass just looks like a tunnel built in 1906 near Sangster Station. And since it was built, the tales of its haunted history have grown. There are many variations of this Bunny Man Tunnel, one of the most known might be the 1970s version of a man in a bunny costume chasing people with a hatchet. The variations are so fruitful that Patricia Johnson, a student at the University of Maryland College Park, conducted a study on this legend where she found 54 variations, and to everyone’s dismay, there was not a grain of truth in any of these stories. Although unfounded, the tale has been the subject of many classic films such as Donnie Darko, and the slasher film “Bunnyman.” Today, people still visit the tunnel in hopes of sighting something supernatural. Corral your crew on a Virginia charter bus and make a stop at the bridge to see which one of you is brave enough to enter the tunnel.

The Great Stalacpipe Organ

We’re hoping you like caves as much as you like music to your ears because this spot has both. Hidden deep inside the Luray Caverns is the surreal placement of The Great Stalacpipe Organ, which was invented by Mr. Leland W. Sprinkle of Springfield, Virginia. The project took three years to build and is the world’s largest musical instrument. Originally built in 1954, it still can be played today, both manually and automated. Have your Virginia charter bus stop at this spot and see this majestic site where although you cannot play the organ yourself, you will get to enjoy the beauty of its acoustics in the cave.

University of Virginia’s Hidden Chemical Hearth

If you’ve ever been into hidden spaces, this one is a doozy. Kept hidden since the 1850s, on the ground floor of the University of Virginia lies a secret chemical hearth center. The University of Virginia’s Hidden Chemical Hearth was discovered during a renovation in 2015, and it may very well be the earliest chemical education in the country, placed on the bottom floor of Virginia’s original library. The research found in the ruins was of the University’s Professor of Chemistry John Emmet and the university’s founder Thomas Jefferson, yes the former president. There, you can find hidden clues and underground tunnels. The University’s Rotunda restored the hearth, preserved it, and is now open for public viewing. Make your Virginia charter bus stop here and see a truly unique part of history.
